Long COVID Poses Bumpy Road to Recovery: 'Patients Are Frustrated' | NBC New York

Hospitalization and death rates may be low amid the current stage of the coronavirus pandemic, but for patients undergoing the long-lasting impacts of the virus, there’s still little light at the end of the tunnel.

Dr. Thomas Gut is the director of the Post-COVID Recovery Center at Staten Island University Hospital and has been leading the program since the fall of 2020. He notes that typically 30 to 35 percent of patients report lingering symptoms after infection, such as loss of sense of smell and neurocognitive issues.

“About a third of the patients that come in here are telling us that they can’t sleep, can’t remember words, difficulty with expressing themselves,” Dr. Gut told NBC New York.

‘New Public Health Dilemma': Long COVID Symptoms, Risks & Unknowns | NBC New York

Over two years into the coronavirus pandemic, millions of patients around the globe are suffering from the lingering symptoms of long COVID, while doctors still search to find answers for treatment.

Long COVID, known as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, is a wide range of complications after a patient has recovered from an initial infection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The average duration of a COVID-19 infection can be anywhere from two to fourteen days, and it is normal to feel some continuing after-effects weeks later from any virus.

While there is no standardized test for diagnosing long-haul COVID, experts say the condition can occur months after recovering from the onset of symptoms.

“So much of the focus up until now has been on the actual infection and preventing the infection, but now we have a new public health dilemma on our hands. I would argue an even bigger public health dilemma — all the people who recover but are not the same,” Dr. Purvi Parikh of the Allergy & Asthma Network told NBC New York.

New York state reported its second known case of the South African variant Tuesday as the number of detected U.K. variant cases soared to 154, 54 percent of which are in the five boroughs, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

Both of the recently detected South African variant cases involve Nassau County residents, Cuomo said. That strain, which involves different mutations on top of the ones present in the U.K. variant, has now been confirmed in 14 states. The CDC still only counted 136 cases of the U.K. variant in the Empire State, and didn’t count the second South African case yet either in Tuesday’s update.
