Chinese pray for health in Lunar New Year as COVID-19 death toll rises

Beijing residents rang in the Lunar New Year on Sunday with many lining up at the iconic Lama temple to pray for health, even as officials reported almost 13,000 new deaths caused by COVID-19 between Jan. 13 and 19.

Queues stretched for about one kilometre outside the temple, which had been repeatedly shut before COVID-19 restrictions ended last month, with thousands waiting to pray for their loved ones.

“Everybody’s finance or life has been greatly affected by these three years of pandemic,” Zhang, a 30-year-old student said. “Having been through the pandemic, now everybody appreciates life even more and this is the starting point of our hopes for the future.”

The death toll update from China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevent comes amid doubts over Beijing’s data transparency and remains extremely low by global standards, according to reports.

#Live#Coronavirus Pandemic Update , Death Toll, Infections and recovery around the World

What is Covid-19?
It is caused by a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before. Like other coronaviruses, it has transferred to humans from animals. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared it a pandemic.

What are the symptoms this coronavirus causes?
According to the WHO, the most common symptoms of Covid-19 are fever, tiredness and a dry cough. Some patients may also have a runny nose, sore throat, nasal congestion and aches and pains or diarrhoea. About 80% of people who get Covid-19 experience a mild case – about as serious as a regular cold – and recover without needing any special treatment.

About one in six people, the WHO says, become seriously ill. The elderly and people with underlying medical problems like high blood pressure, heart problems or diabetes, or chronic respiratory conditions, are at a greater risk of serious illness from Covid-19.

In the UK, the National health Service (NHS) has identified the specific symptoms to look for as experiencing either:

a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
a new continuous cough – this means you’ve started coughing repeatedly
As this is viral pneumonia, antibiotics are of no use. The antiviral drugs we have against flu will not work, and there is currently no vaccine. Recovery depends on the strength of the immune system.

Should I go to the doctor if I have a temperature or a cough?
No. In the UK, the NHS advice is now that anyone with symptoms should stay at home for at least 7 days. If you live with other people, they should stay at home for at least 14 days, to avoid spreading the infection outside the home. This applies to everyone, regardless of whether they have travelled abroad.

In the UK, you should look on the dedicated coronavirus NHS 111 website for information. If you get worse or your symptoms last longer than seven days, you should call NHS 111. People will no longer be tested for the virus unless they are in hospital.

Many countries have imposed travel bans and lockdown conditions in order to try and halt the spread of the virus. You should check with your local authorities for the latest advice on seeking medical assistance.

How many people have been affected?
China’s national health commission confirmed human-to-human transmission in January. As of 22 March, more than 300,000 people have been infected in more than 150 countries, according to the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

There have been over 13,000 deaths globally. Just over 3,000 of those deaths have occurred in mainland China, where the coronavirus was first recorded in the city of Wuhan. Italy has been hardest hit, though, with over 4,800 fatalities. Many of those who have died had underlying health conditions, which the coronavirus complicated.

More than 92,000 people are recorded as having recovered from the coronavirus.

COVID-19 Pandemic | South Africa's coronavirus death toll breaches the 100 000 mark

With South Africa’s Covid-19 death toll breaching the 100-thousand mark, the health department says the number of deaths occurring due to the virus is likely much higher than what is being currently reported.
This is due to people who may have died from Covid-19 and who were denied care, were too afraid to get care or didn’t want to risk going to a health facility.
The country is bracing for a 5th wave of the virus pandemic, which scientists say is likely to hit in May.

Covid death toll data mismatch: More than 3k people succumbed to coronavirus in the last 24 hours

Covid death toll data mismatch: More than 3k people succumbed to coronavirus in the last 24 hours

The second wave of novel coronavirus is spreading like a wildfire in India. As the Covid-positive cases are increasing, the fatality rate is also going up at the same pace in the nation. In the last 24 hours, the nation has witnessed around 3000 Covid deaths for the first time. But the ground report introduced us to the fact that there is a difference in the official and ground data. The Karnataka government has no uniformity in collecting the data regarding the deaths. The death tally in the health bulletin of the state, the hospitals informs the government regarding the deaths and government update in the health bulletin but the health bulletin displays the earlier death rates in today’s death tally, which is perplexing the viewer to understand the data.
