The chancellor, Rishi Sunak, said “hard times are here” – warning that many more people would lose their jobs in the months ahead.

Coronavirus Updates: U.S. to Get 100 Million Doses of Moderna Vaccine; Putin OKs Russia's Sputnik V

Moderna Inc. reached a deal with the Trump administration to supply 100 million doses of its experimental vaccine for Covid-19, in a pact valued at up to $1.5 billion, the latest in a string of supply agreements the U.S. has reached to stockpile the most advanced vaccines in testing.

“I’m pleased to announce we’ve reached an agreement with Moderna to manufacture and deliver 100 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine candidate,” President Donald Trump said at a White House briefing. “The federal government will own these vaccine doses, we’re buying them.”

Moderna, which is already receiving $955 million in government assistance to test the vaccine, will be selling the vaccine for roughly $15 a dose, or $30 for a two-dose regimen.

President Vladimir Putin said Russia cleared the world’s first Covid-19 vaccine for use and hopes to begin mass inoculation soon, even before clinical testing has finished.

“The first registration has taken place,” Putin said Tuesday at a televised government meeting, adding that one of his daughters has already been given the vaccine. “I hope that we can soon begin mass production.”

The move paves the way for widespread use of the vaccine among Russia’s population, with production starting next month, although it may take until January to complete trials. Medical workers could begin receiving the drug by the end of the month, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said at the meeting.

Coronavirus vaccine update: The global race is on | COVID-19 Special

The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t slowing down, and there is only one hope to end it: a vaccine. But news of Russia granting regulatory approval to a Covid-19 vaccine has been received with skepticism by leading health experts like Anthony Fauci. While Russia may be the first country to approve one, thousands of scientists across the world are working on more than 150 vaccines. What is their research showing? And when will they be ready? Normally, it takes years to develop a new vaccine. But in times of this pandemic, it can’t go fast enough.

Coronavirus: Ontario pledes $1.6B for municipalities, including funding for transit | FULL

The Ontario government announced on Wednesday that it would provide $1.6 billion in funding for municipalities to help support them during the novel coronavirus pandemic, which would include $660 million to support transit systems in communities across the province.

Premier Doug Ford made the announcement alongside Associate Transportation Minister Kinga Surma and Finance Minister Rod Phillips.

Surma said transit systems would receive a base amount as well as an allocation based on ridership to immediately “cover losses” created by the pandemic. She said a second phase of funding would help municipalities cover additional costs “based on their actual financial pressures.”

Ford also addressed a recent fiscal update that found the Ontario budget deficit was projected to jump to $38.5 billion in 2020-2021. He admitted to reporters that the government’s plans to balance the budget by 2023 had been dramatically changed by the pandemic.
